Which sensors/actuators would you like to use with VIPER?

Tell us which sensors or actuators you mostly use in your projects.

VIPER already include all the TOI Shield sensors and actuators:
  • Temp. Sensor
  • Light. Sensor
  • Microphone
  • IR Receiver
  • IR Emitter
  • Touch Sensor
  • Buzzer
  • Neopixel Led
Suggest us the sensors/actuators you would like to see in the VIPER library.
  • Stepper motors?
  • NFC?
  • Gas and Air Quality?
  • Distance (ultrasound)?
  • Etc...

we are working on Ultrasound distance analog sensor from Grove and on Rs232 - RS485 converter.

If you are working on some of these sensors please share your code, we will be glad to support you and then include it in the Viper libraries

It might be useful to put up a tutorial on how to create a sensor "driver".
  • I've got a pair of Parallax PIR sensors laying around--would they currently work with Viper?

    Sure!
You can connect them to any board Digital pin.
PIR sensors are usually very noisy...
I sugget to try them with the "Digital Sensor Debounce" example you can find in the Smart Sensor lib
    Let me know and please post your results on our hackster platform page https://www.hackster.io/viper ;

    Great idea!
I added it on our ToDoList

    SSD1306 OLEDs would be great...
Stepper motors... i.e. easy driver or similar...
  • Teaser.... Stepper motor library and animator are almost ready

  • Is IR Emitter/Receiver support there yet? I don't see an example.

Will be released soon with update 0008. I think next week.
    stay tuned.

  • would like to see support for the 3650 accelerometer gyro, the HMC5883 compass and bmp180 barometer also the ublox 6,7 and 8 GPS modules

  • It would be great to be able to connect to garage door openers that use advanced protocols on 2-wire cables (not just open/close button, but 2-way comm incl. sensor alerts, support backlight, lamp control), such as Chamberlain LiftMaster Elite Series, before they made WiFi-enabled opener versions.

I suspect older ones might use some low-tech approaches for cheapest control panels (e.g. one or few diodes in series with a switch), but newer ones seem to be way more sophisticated. Just shorting wires resets smart controller (obviously it looses power, it's clock resets, and it takes a while to boot back up)...

It sounds like fun project to reverse-engineer those, if I only had some free time.

Perhaps Viper team can have some support directly from manufacturers, which will create a short path to WiFi enabling all of their products.
  • Another communication channel frequently neglected in home automation - IR remote control (both send and receive functions). WiFi connection to IR control can tie in so many household devices, that it covers huge space with little investment.

Also RF remote control protocols can be useful as well.
  • Hi @iva2k ;

On update 0008 we released an IR receive, decode and send library you can use for grabbing remote controllers packages or for communicating between devices endowed with IR sender and receiver.
Wifi is already supported for the CC3000 chip so Arduino like boards plugged with the Adafruit CC3000 shield and the Particle Core board can no go online.
The Photon wifi chip driver will be released in October.
    Thanks for your contribution!
We need your feedback for growing Viper in the good direction

Can you add DS18B20 (1-Wire) Digital Temperature Sensor? It's very used!
    Thanks for your great work!
  • I must second this. Support for the SSD1306 would be great, plus support for the up and coming Electron with GPS module from Particle would be awesome!

  • +1 for SSD1306
